I’ve been on-line since 1993 and have seen many fads come and go. I never cease to be amazed by the number of websites out there that simply do not meet the needs of the customer.
Before getting in to IT I spent many years in the retail sector, selling stuff and managing people. It was here that I learned the benefit of providing excellent customer service and the need to talk in plain English.
Then I moved in to IT. I worked for a Wiltshire based IT company designing, installing and supporting business computer networks. I was working with Novell and Microsoft solutions. Clients ranged from from SMEs to universities and local authorities
Next up was business support and consultancy. Since 1999 I have been helping businesses with everything to do with their on-line presence, from websites to email marketing and everything in-between.
A lot of websites that I look at look pretty, have snazzy “stuff” happening. Quite a few have pretty animated images and sliding graphics. However, they fail one fundamental test! They don’t provide anything that the customer needs. This means that the businesses don’t get the inquiries or make the sales they need.
I’ve also seen loads of businesses jump on on-line marketing “bandwagons”. They feel disappointed when the hoped-for results don’t appear. This may because they’ve jumped too soon, jumped on the wrong bandwagon, haven’t given it enough time or have gone about it the wrong way.
